Chinese Cultural Night with SMACS

March 6th, 2012 | Posted by newsilkroad in Event - (0 Comments)

On March 8, 2012 7:00PM, SMACS (St. Mike’s Association of Chinese Students) will bring to you a taste of what it’s like to be a Chinese. Come out to play traditional Chinese games that you have never seen before. Lots of fun guaranteed! Whats more? Free snacks and drinks!

Location: Brennan Hall (BR) First floor coop

Thinking of an enjoyable and meaning summer in 2012?
Consider NSR’s China internship opportunity!

Instead of being stuck at home and wasted away, why not treat yourself to an exotic delight by doing an internship outside Canada? To that end, the NSR is inviting Lincoln Wu to provide internship opportunities in Beijing to UofT students. As you may already know, Beijing is China’s political and cultural centre, and also home to twenty six “Fortune 500” companies, the third most in the world after Tokyo and Paris in 2009. Thus, it would be an excellent place to gain working experience, and learn about China, its people and the transformations which could potentially make it the largest economy in the world. Besides, it would as well be an enjoyable experience as Beijing has some of the country’s best delicacies and heritage.

The info session is being arranged and will be held in early March. Please sign up for NSR membership to receive newsletter for more information.

NSR Events Winter-Summer 2012

January 13th, 2012 | Posted by newsilkroad in Event - (0 Comments)

Hello everyone,

Welcome back to school! While you are getting prepared for your new semester (or unfortunately, back-to-school tests), please note that NSR is going to introduce our various activities from now throughout this semester.

* Cultural Committee Events:

1. Movie Nights & potluck

     This event will be consisted of two parts: we watch a film, and have discussion while having marvelous food after that. We shall exchange our opinion on any cultural topic we find interested in.

2. Documentary Night

     This event is similar with the first one, but a little bit more formal. Usually we are going to watch a documentary about contemporary Chinese life and society. After that, we should have a seminar on some of the issues the documentary presents. This will help we get to touch with the view and opinion from a different perspective.

     The above two events are scheduled every two weeks interspersed.

3. Joe Wong Stand-up Comedy show (tentative)

     Joe Wong is a well-known comedian in the US. His identity as a new immigrant from China draws a large attention on him, both in the US and in China. If you haven’t seen his show, this is a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buSv1jjAels bet you are going to love him! We are making contact with Joe Wong and his agent and hope we can have him on one Friday night in mid-March.

* Business Committee Events:

4. Summer Internship

    This summer, we are going to help current U of T students for finding an internship opportunity in China. We are still working on this program and more detailed information should come out within a month.

5. Series conference for individual corporations (CNPC, CPCC, Bank of China,etc.)

6. Chinese Corporation in Canada Conference

     We are going to hold conference for Chinese corporations operating overseas. For each conference, we will have one or several executive from the corporations as our guest speaker and allow audience to interact with the speaker. You will be able to see Chinese business from another perspective.

* Education Committee Events:

7. Language Lecture

    Our language programs are going to consisted of two parts: teaching English-speakers Chinese, and help Chinese-speakers learn a foreign language (not limited to English). The lecturers would be given by peers and up-to-date Chinese vocabularies will be introduced to you. If anyone would like to teach another language to all, you are welcome to introduce yourself.

8. Cultural Lecture

——Business Cultural Lecture

——Highlights of contemporary Chinese culture

    This is a culture exchange program, which means our peer will give lectures featuring the cultural realm they are specialize in. (e.g. martial art, the way we fall in love, etc.) This will definitely be an amazing and lively program by learning new things and the way of doing new things.

However, these are not all the activities we are going to offer. Some events are being secretly arranged and if you have come up with any new ideas, be free to speak up and share your suggestions!

Best,
